Two weeks ago, I was hired by The Pauli Murray Foundation Center for History & Social Justice. I was hired to document the celebration of the release of a United States Mint Quarter in honor of Reverend Dr. Pauli Murray. Over the years, I have photographed several of the center’s events. However, I’m delighted for the privilege to be part of the documentation of this specific event. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

Reverend Dr. Pauli Murray is regarded as one of the most important social justice advocates of the 20th century. She was a poet, writer, activist, lawyer, Episcopal priest, and a staunch advocate for civil rights, fighting against racial and sex discrimination. In 1950, Murray published \u201cStates\u2019 Laws on Race and Color,\u201d an examination and critique of state segregation laws throughout the nation. Frequently referred to as the \u201cbible\u201d of the civil rights movement and commonly cited as the foundation for the arguments posed in the landmark Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education<\/em>, Murray skillfully illustrated the social implications and unconstitutionality of segregation laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe first coin of the 2024 American Women Quarters\u2122 Program honors the life and legacy of Reverend Dr. Pauli Murray,\u201d said Mint Director Ventris C. Gibson. \u201cReverend Dr. Murray was keenly aware of the oppression that she faced as a Black woman. She lived her life and fought tirelessly as a steadfast advocate for civil rights and gender equality.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program Artist Emily Damstra designed the image, and United States Mint Chief Engraver Joseph Menna sculpted the image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe unique juxtaposition of text and Dr. Murray\u2019s face challenged the way I approached sculpting the relief for this design,\u201d said Menna. \u201cThe likeness needed to honor the surface of the letters yet still project the illusion of being in the round. I hope achieving this goal honors both the integrity of the design and Dr. Murray\u2019s legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

I love the story of Reverend Dr. Pauli Murray. She has a very inspiring and powerful story. She was a pioneer and an ardent activist who never gave up equal rights for everyone. She lived her life her own way against all odds. The release is a well-deserved venture and gesture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
